Last year sometime, I caught wind of this HOT new trend. Drinking activated charcoal. First, who knew you could “ENJOY” drinking something that is well, charcoal, jet black and why would anyone want to? From what I understand, Activated Charcoal works as a detoxifier by trapping toxins and chemicals in its millions of tiny pores. While our bodies soak up toxins and absorb them, charcoal has the ability to absorb and bind to the toxins, which stop our bodies from absorbing them.
A true story (brief)- When I was 24 years old, I was going through a tough time in my life. Decided I would take my own life, I swallowed about fifty pills and went and locked myself in my room. Thankfully, my sister found me and forced me to throw up what I could. After being rushed to the hospital, they gave me a styrofoam cup filled to the rim with this thick black gooey stuff and told me to drink the whole cup or I can’t go home. It was charcoal. The charcoal bound to the pills and saved me. What a time that was.Some people use it as a cleanse or part of a detox program, and some use it just to keep the gas and bloating away.
The company Suja was promoting their Limited Edition Midnight Tonic, so I decided to jump on it and try it. I ended up ordering a case of them (12 bottles).
The ingredients are:
WATER, ORGANIC LEMON JUICE, ORGANIC STEVIA LEAF EXTRACT POWDER, ACTIVATED CHARCOAL, ORGANIC SCHIZANDRA BERRY JUICE, ORGANIC GINGER JUICE
I couldn’t wait to get them. When I finally did, I open one and started to drink it. Hmm, Not bad! I think I could actually make it better than this. I liked it but I knew this Fit Green Goddess could create something at home and it would be just as good, if not better and best part is that it’s a heck of a lot cheaper to make it yourself!
I am thinking of a few different recipes, that I will share once I create, but here is one I found that actually looks yummy! I switched up the recipe a teeny bit- Here is mine!
Orange Ginger Juice
with Activated Charcoal
- 1 Peeled Oranges
- 2 Green Apples
- 4 Carrots
- 1 2-inch piece of ginger
- 1 T. activated charcoal
- 1/2 tsp. Himalayan Salt
In a juicer, juice the orange, apples carrots and ginger. Stir in the activated charcoal. You can add ice if you like it super cold.
