For about three weeks now, I have been slowly eliminating grains out of my diet. Allow me to explain first that the only grains I eat or gluten free old fashioned oats (daily), occasionally I would have quinoa, and the other grain I have would be brown rice pasta. To be honest, I could take them or leave them and in most cases, I would eat them just because I was making them for Mario or Sasha. In the three weeks of experimenting with this sort of eating, I have noticed that eating a high fat / super low carb diet leaves me satiated way longer. I noticed that I don’t have valleys and peaks in my energy levels, and I do not have any cravings for any sort of sugar. I also realized that I don’t need those carbs for energy, focus or for any other reason. They just taste good! TO me, looking back at all of the meals I have made with grains, it’s as if they are just fillers- ways to fill your belly and keep you satiated. What I have learned about my body and grains is that whenever I would eat them, I’d be hungry twenty minutes later regardless of how I made them.
In my opinion, looking back at all of the meals I have made with grains, it’s as if they were just fillers- ways to fill your belly and keep you satiated. What I have learned about my body and grains is that whenever I would eat them, I’d be hungry twenty minutes later regardless of how I made them. I used to think and maybe you have too that carbs are the best source of energy, right? I was sadly mistaken and I proved it to myself through experimenting. I am now eating 3 meals a day and on rare occasion, I may have my vegan chips and paleo granola with some tea at night, or another snack, but none of which include oatmeal. My workouts are awesome as my strength has not diminished. I am NOT using creatine and haven’t since March 15th, so the strength I feel is a true strength. The energy I have is because I am not having carbs to spike my insulin only to drop down causing fatigue.
Now, this is all new to me. I was a vegan for almost four years and lived on complex carbs! It still shocks me that I am eating like this.
Here are some of the benefits I have noticed with myself in three weeks:
- satiated longer
- no desire to snack during the day
- no bloating in my belly
- no valleys and hills in my energy levels. They stayed consistent throughout the day
- my skin is glowing even more
- no achy joints
- no foggy brain
The only- I mean only complaint is that my bowels are so confused right now. Used to going 2 times a day, this has stopped and sometimes it hurts to go. What can I do about it? Increase my green veggies even more and chug that water! Water is MOST important right now and well, everyday no matter what your diet is.
So, I bet you’re wondering if I will ever eat grains again… and well, I can’t answer that. I know, for now, I like how I feel and not missing them. I will take it day by day.
After I crushed today’s workout, I made this smoothie. Now, if you want to incorporate some carbs, then where I have shredded coconut, you can replace that with 1/4 cup gluten free old fashioned oats. this was so filling and so delish!
